SUNGO was founded in 1997 and was registered as an Incorporated Society in the following year. The organisation was established to provide alternative development options and assistance to vulnerable groups in Samoa and to provide input into Government policy from Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), Community Based Organisations (CBOs) and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) on issues which concerned them.

SUNGO represented a region wide initiative to develop a network of NGOs to assist in implementing regional assistance and projects. Today SUNGO has responsibilities regionally, internationally and globally to provide input into developmental issues that affect its member organisations.

The organisation will to continue to improve its relationships with all of its stakeholders including the Government by working to meet community expectations about contributing to the development of Civil Society and to Samoa as a whole.

The Executive Council is committed to furthering the work of SUNGO, promoting its activities, and providing effective services for its members. It also recognises the importance of an effective Strategic Plan that sets out SUNGO's future direction which has been shaped by the development and growth of the organisation.

Having a clear direction and focus will help ensure ongoing support, commitment and responsibility by Members for implementation of the Strategic Plan for 2011-2016.
